SkinAI User Manual

Please carefully read this user manual before using the SkinAI application. Following all the recommendations and warnings provided will help ensure safe and effective use. Keep this manual for future reference.

1. General Information

1.1 Purpose

SkinAI is a mobile and web-based application powered by artificial intelligence to assist in examining skin lesions. It enables users to capture magnified photographs of skin areas, document and compare images over time, and receive a preliminary classification of skin abnormalities. The goal of SkinAI is to aid in the early identification of potentially concerning skin changes and support users in monitoring their skin health.

1.2 AI-Powered Analysis & Knowledge Base

SkinAI utilizes cutting-edge artificial intelligence to evaluate images of skin lesions and moles.
It is trained on an extensive database of dermatological research, clinical guidelines, and trusted medical literature from sources including:

By continuously integrating the latest clinical research, the AI system enhances its ability to identify both common and potentially serious skin conditions.
While the app does not offer a medical diagnosis, it provides risk assessments based on established dermatological standards.

Each image submitted is analyzed through AI-driven pattern recognition, matching visual features against comprehensive medical reference data.
Users receive a preliminary risk assessment along with educational insights, helping them make informed decisions about seeking professional medical advice.

1.3 Recommendations for Using SkinAI

The SkinAI application is recommended for the following purposes:

  • Magnified skin photography: obtaining clear, high-magnification images of skin areas, allowing detailed examination of moles, spots, and other lesions.
  • Documentation and image analysis: saving photographs in the application with the ability to zoom and scale for closer inspection. All images are stored in the check history for later viewing and comparison.
  • Preliminary classification of lesions: analyzing captured images using artificial intelligence to determine likely types of skin lesions. Based on visual features, the app suggests several possible conditions or skin states that the examined lesion may resemble. This helps the user understand what category the detected change might belong to (for example, a mole, keratoma, potentially dangerous neoplasm, etc.).
  • Long-term monitoring: regular rescanning of the same skin areas to track changes over time. SkinAI provides tools to compare the current skin condition with previous results, plot graphs of changes, and receive reminders for scheduled checks. This approach helps to notice trends in a timely manner (for example, growth or color change of a mole) and seek a doctor’s consultation promptly.
  • Research purposes: the app can be used by interested users for a deeper study of the condition of their skin, to receive general skincare recommendations, and to increase their knowledge of dermatology.

Note: SkinAI is for informational purposes only and is NOT a diagnostic tool.

1.4 Contraindications and Limitations

Despite the wide capabilities of SkinAI, do not use the application for skin analysis in the following cases:

  • Damaged skin: the skin area has open wounds, abrasions, or recent surgical marks (for example, right after a biopsy or lesion excision). The application is not intended for use on damaged or healing skin.
  • Diagnosis and treatment: SkinAI is not a medical device for diagnosis. You must not use the app’s results to self-diagnose or to choose or change treatment methods without consulting a doctor. All treatment decisions should be made only by a qualified medical professional.
  • Very dark skin or heavy tan: if you have a very dark skin phototype (V or VI on the Fitzpatrick scale) or a strong tan. In such cases, the accuracy of visual analysis decreases.
  • Lesion under a nail or on a mucous membrane: for example, on the lips or genitals. The smartphone camera cannot properly capture such areas for analysis.
  • Lesion very close to a noticeable scar: scar tissue next to the lesion can distort the results of automatic recognition.
  • Foreign substances on the skin: if on the lesion or within ~5 cm around it there are foreign objects such as a tattoo, marker ink, sunscreen, cosmetics, powder, etc. Foreign elements on the skin hinder correct image analysis.
  • Lesion covered by many hairs: hairs make it difficult for the algorithm to recognize the lesion’s borders and structure.
  • Lesion in a deep skin fold: for example, in the armpit, groin, etc., where it is hard to ensure sufficient lighting and camera focus.

If at least one of the above conditions applies, the accuracy of SkinAI’s analysis drops sharply. In such situations, you should consult a dermatologist directly for an evaluation of your skin instead of using the application.

1.5 Intended Use

Intended for use by adults (18+ years) for skin monitoring and documentation.
SkinAI analyses images of human skin (ages 3 to 65+) captured with a smartphone camera to assist users in recognising visual similarities between skin conditions and reference cases in the database.

The app assists users in identifying and documenting potential skin conditions for further medical evaluation, enhancing skin health monitoring and awareness.

The instructions are tailored for different user groups: professionals (cosmetologists, dermatologists, primary care professionals) and lay users (patients 18+). Professionals should rely on their medical expertise, while lay users are advised to consult healthcare professionals for all medical concerns.

2. Privacy and Security

Before starting to use SkinAI, please familiarize yourself with the Privacy Policy and Terms of Use published on the official project website. By using the application, you agree to those terms and understand the associated risks.

When transmitting data (skin photographs, personal profile information, etc.) over the internet, there is a risk of unintended disclosure of information, delays, interruptions, or data loss. The SkinAI developers take measures to protect your information (data is stored in encrypted form), but complete security of data transmission cannot be guaranteed. The user acknowledges these risks and assumes responsibility for possible consequences of network failures.

Always keep your account credentials (login and password) secret. Do not share them with third parties. If an unauthorized person gains access to your SkinAI account, the confidentiality of your medical data and test results may be compromised. If you suspect your account has been compromised, it is recommended to change your password immediately and contact SkinAI support.

3. System Requirements

For the SkinAI application to work properly, your device must meet the following minimum configuration:

  • Operating System: a smartphone or tablet running Android 6.0 (API level 23) or higher, or iOS 12.0 or higher. The device should be officially certified by the OS manufacturer (Google/Apple) and have no unauthorized modifications to its software (see the warning below).
  • Internet connection: continuous internet access (via mobile data or Wi-Fi) to save data and send images to the server for analysis. Without an internet connection, analysis results may not be available.
  • Camera and storage access: the app requires permission to use your device’s camera for taking skin photos, and access to internal storage for saving images and results.
  • Recommended camera specifications: the device’s built-in camera should have sufficient capabilities to produce high-quality photos:
    • Resolution: at least 10 MP (megapixels).
    • Lens aperture: f/1.9 or larger aperture (a smaller f-number).
    • Support for HDR (High Dynamic Range) mode for challenging lighting.
    • Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) to reduce blurriness.
    • Autofocus (such as dual-pixel PDAF or similar technology) for sharp focus on the subject.
    • Pixel size: ~1.0 µm or larger.
    • Camera sensor size: ~1/2.8″ or bigger.

Note: The above camera parameters correspond to a typical modern mid- to high-end smartphone. A device with weaker characteristics might produce photos of insufficient quality, which will affect SkinAI’s analysis accuracy.

Attention: Do not install SkinAI on unofficial or modified devices. This refers to “clone” smartphones of unknown origin, as well as devices whose firmware has been altered in an unauthorized way not approved by the manufacturer. Using the app on such devices may lead to incorrect operation or data vulnerabilities. Also, do not install SkinAI on compromised devices (Android with root access or jailbroken iOS). Tampering with the device’s security integrity can lead to app malfunctions and risks to your data privacy.

  • Medical Technology Notice.
This application integrates CE-marked image analysis technology developed by Skinive B.V., a medical software provider based in the Netherlands, under a commercial agreement. For more information about the technology provider, please visit: skinive.com
The underlying technology (Skinive) is a Class I medical device software (MDR EU 2017/745) designed to analyze images of human skin (typically ages 3–65+) taken via smartphone camera. The system identifies visual similarities between user-submitted skin images and reference conditions in a validated medical database.
The purpose of the app is to assist users in recognizing potential skin abnormalities and tracking changes over time. It is not a diagnostic tool, but a pre-screening solution that encourages timely consultation with qualified medical professionals.

By adhering to these rules, you will increase the effectiveness of SkinAI and obtain the most reliable analysis results.

    4.2 Installation and Registration

To begin using SkinAI, you need to install the application and create a user account. Below is a step-by-step guide:

    1. Download the application: Find and download the SkinAI app from the official app store – Google Play (for Android) or the App Store (for iOS). Make sure your device has enough free storage space for the installation. After downloading, launch the installer and follow the standard system prompts to install the app.
    2. First launch: Open the SkinAI application. On the first launch (and also after logging out of an account), you will be shown welcome screens with a brief overview of the app’s features. Swipe through these screens (or tap “Next”) to view this introductory information.
    3. Choose registration method: The app allows you to sign up in several ways:
      • Using an Apple ID (on iOS) or Google account (on Android) – to quickly register with your existing Apple/Google credentials (Facebook/Meta login may also be available).
      • Using an email address – you will need to provide a valid email and create a password.

Select your preferred registration method by tapping the corresponding button.

    4. Profile data: If you register via email (instead of via Apple/Google), enter the requested information — your email address and a secure password. Tap “Next” (or the appropriate button) to proceed. If you are using a social network or Apple ID to register, this step may be skipped, as basic data will be pulled in automatically.
    5. Account confirmation: If you signed up with an email and password, you may need to confirm your email address via a verification link sent to your inbox. Check your email for a message from SkinAI and follow the instructions to activate your account. (If you skip this now, you can complete email verification later via the SkinAI website.) Once confirmed, your SkinAI account will be fully activated.
    6. Completion: After registration is complete, the main working screen of SkinAI will be displayed. All app functions will now be available to you as a logged-in user.

Logging into an existing account: If you have used SkinAI before and already have an account, on the start screen choose “Log In”. Enter the email and password associated with your account to access your saved data and history.

    4.3 Photographing Skin and Analysis

After registration, you can proceed to check the condition of your skin using SkinAI. The process of performing a skin scan is described below:

    1. Start a new check: On the app’s main screen, tap the central button (SkinAI icon, usually a stylized logo or camera symbol) to start a new skin analysis. After tapping, a pop-up window will appear with brief photo-taking recommendations (for example, requirements for lighting, focus, and distance from the skin). It is recommended to read these tips carefully and then confirm that you are ready to continue.
    2. Select body area: After confirming, an interactive model of the human body (3D diagram) will appear. On this model, specify the area where the skin lesion of interest is located. Rotate or zoom the 3D figure with your fingers to find the needed area (e.g., left arm, back, face, etc.), and tap the corresponding zone on the model. This step helps categorize the image correctly later and organize results by body part.
    3. Take or choose a photo: Next, the app will prompt you to either take a new photo or select an existing photo from your device’s gallery.
      • Real-time capture: If you choose to take a new photo, the camera interface will open. Point your smartphone’s camera at the selected skin lesion. Try to position the lesion in the center of the frame. Ensure there is enough light, no glare on the lens, and hold the phone steady. If there are hairs in the area, gently move them aside so the lesion is fully visible. When everything is ready, press the shutter button (usually a round orange button with the SkinAI logo in the camera view) to take the photo.
      • Select from gallery: If you already have a quality photograph of the skin area, you can tap the “Gallery” button and choose an image from your device. Note that the photo should meet the same requirements (sharpness, good lighting, no filters) for a successful analysis.
    4. Using camera tools: In the camera mode, additional tools are available to improve photo quality:
      • Zoom: the ability to zoom in or out to frame the image at the desired size. Try to achieve a scale at which the lesion is clearly visible and occupies a large part of the frame.
      • Flash: if lighting is insufficient, you can enable the flash by tapping the flash icon. However, be careful that the flash does not overexpose the image — when shooting very close to the skin it’s sometimes better to use external light sources instead of the flash.
      • AI camera assistant (PRO feature): the premium version of SkinAI includes an AI-driven camera assistant that provides real-time feedback on image quality and helps you position the camera optimally. This assistant can suggest adjustments (to focus, distance, or lighting) as you prepare to take a photo, ensuring the image meets the requirements for analysis.
    5. Photo quality check: After you take a photo, SkinAI will automatically analyze its technical quality. If the photo turned out blurry or too dark, a notification will appear asking you to retake the photo (for example: “Low image quality, please try again”). In this case, go back to the photo step and try to fix the issue: stabilize your phone, improve the lighting, or adjust the focus.

If the issue is a lack of internet connection (e.g., you see a “No connection” message), save the photo and try again later when you have connectivity. SkinAI cannot perform the analysis without access to its server.
    6. Sending for analysis: When the photo meets the minimum quality requirements, the application will automatically, within a few seconds, send the image to the server for analysis by the neural network. During the upload and while waiting for the result, a loading indicator or message (“Analyzing…”) may be displayed. Wait for this process to finish (usually it only takes a few seconds with a good connection).
    7. Receiving preliminary results: After a successful analysis, SkinAI will display on the screen percentage scores indicating how closely your image matches several categories of skin conditions. Usually the 3 most likely results are shown, for example:
      • Benign nevus – 85% similarity
      • Seborrheic keratosis – 10%
      • Suspicion of melanoma – 5%

These numbers reflect the degree of visual similarity between the identified lesion and examples in SkinAI’s knowledge base. Visually, the results are presented as a list or cards showing the category name and the percentage indicator.

    8. Selecting a result: Review the suggested results and their percentages carefully. Tap on the result which you believe most closely matches the description and appearance of your case. (If you are unsure, you might start with the one with the highest percentage; however, it is too early to draw final conclusions — first read the informational details provided.)
    9. Viewing the result details: After you select a result, a result card screen will open. Here, detailed information will be displayed, including:
      • The photograph you took (for reference).
      • The name of the selected category (for example, “Papillomatous Nevus”).
      • The similarity percentage and a short explanation.
      • Recommendations for further actions: for example, advice to consult a dermatologist for an examination, to monitor over time and repeat a scan after a certain period, etc.
      • A “Consult a Doctor” option – you can directly proceed from the result to an online consultation (see section 4.7) to send this result to a doctor.
    10. Saving the result: After reviewing the result, you can save it to your account. The application will usually offer a “Save to history” button. If you tap it, the photo and its associated information will be added to your personal history of checks (see section 4.4). This will allow you to revisit this result later or show it to a doctor. If you do not save the result, the information might not be available the next time you log in.
    11. Informational use only: Remember that any results provided by SkinAI are preliminary. Even if the app indicates a high percentage similarity with a particular condition, this is not a diagnosis. Always interpret the data with common sense: if you have the slightest doubt, schedule an appointment with a doctor. SkinAI’s results are meant to increase your awareness and do not replace a professional medical examination.
    12. Sharing results with a doctor: You can provide the obtained results to a dermatologist for a more accurate consultation. In the result card or in your history, there is a share function — for example, you can send a report to a doctor’s email or show your phone screen during an office visit. The SkinAI online service also offers an integrated consultation feature, where a doctor can remotely review your saved results (see section 4.7 for details). Use these features to get a qualified medical opinion on your results.

After completing a scan, you can return to the main screen and, if necessary, perform additional scans of other lesions or skin areas. The number of checks is not limited (note: in the free version the number of scans per day may be limited, while PRO subscribers have no such limits – check the current plan terms).

    4.4 Storing Results and History

All photos you take and the results you obtain are automatically saved locally in the SkinAI app – they are accessible through the History section, and they are not saved to your phone’s gallery for privacy protection. You can view your past checks only within the application, by logging into your account.

Key features of storing and managing results:

    • History of checks: On the main screen or in the app menu, there is a section (often represented by a “history” or list icon) that shows a chronological list of all your saved scan results. Each item in the list typically includes a thumbnail of the photo, the name (or type) of the identified lesion, and the date/time of the scan.
    • Viewing past results: By tapping any entry in the history, you will open the detailed result from that scan — including the photo and all associated information (percentages, recommendations, etc.), similar to the screen you saw right after completing the check. This is useful if you need to recall the recommendations or compare with your current skin condition.
    • Deleting results: If you want to remove a saved result from your history (for example, if an image turned out to be uninformative or was taken by mistake), swipe left on that entry. A “Delete” button will appear. Tapping it will irreversibly erase the record from your history. Attention: deleted results cannot be restored. Make sure you no longer need the information. It might be wise to save important images elsewhere or export a report before deleting an entry.
    • Privacy: Your saved data is visible only to you (and to a doctor, if you grant them access via a consultation). No third party can view your history without your account login. If necessary, you can completely delete your account and all associated data through the profile settings (see section 4.5).

In this way, the SkinAI history serves as your personal journal of skin health. It is recommended to save all results in order to have a complete picture of observations, especially if you plan to track changes over time (see section 4.8).

    4.5 User Profile

The bottom navigation menu of the app includes a “Profile” tab (usually indicated by a person or user icon). In the profile section, you can manage your account settings and view your subscription status:

    • Changing password: You can change the password for your SkinAI account. To do this, select the appropriate option in the profile, enter your current password and then a new password, and confirm the change. It is recommended to update your password periodically for security.
    • Subscription status: Your current plan is displayed here – for example, Standard (free) or PRO (premium). This section may also show information about a PRO subscription if you have one, such as its expiration date and the premium features available.
    • Manage subscription: If you want to access additional SkinAI features, tap the “Become PRO” (or “Subscribe”) button. A screen will open describing the benefits of a premium account (for example, unlimited scans, the AI camera assistant, priority in doctor consultations, etc.) along with instructions for purchasing a subscription through Google Play or the App Store. Follow the prompts to complete the purchase. After a successful payment, your status will change to PRO and additional features will become active (a welcome screen for PRO users will be displayed).
    • Technical information: In the profile, you can also find technical details about the app — the current version of SkinAI, information about the developer, links to the Terms of Use, Privacy Policy, help resources, etc. This information may be needed if you contact support.
    • Contacting support: If you encounter questions about the app or technical issues, the profile section includes a “Support” or “Contact Us” option. Tapping it will either open a form to send a message to the developers or display the SkinAI support contact email. Describe your problem or question as thoroughly as possible to receive help quickly.
    • Delete account: In extreme cases, if you want to remove all your data, there is a “Delete Account” function. Keep in mind that after confirming this action, your profile and all saved results will be permanently erased from the system. This action is irreversible, and in the future, to use SkinAI again, you would need to register a new account.

The profile section allows you to tailor the app to your needs and access additional options. We also recommend periodically checking for app updates in the app store — a new version may contain improvements and new features that could be useful for you.

    4.6 Scheduling Checks (Calendar)

SkinAI helps not only to analyze your skin condition now, but also to organize routine checks in the future. The app has a calendar section where you can view scheduled events and set reminders for regular skin monitoring:

    • Scheduling a new check: To plan a future skin check, pick the desired date in the calendar (tap on the date). Then tap the “Schedule Check” button. The app will prompt you to set a reminder time and possibly a name or comment (for example, “check mole on shoulder”). Save the event. On the chosen day and time, SkinAI will send a notification to your phone, reminding you to perform a scan of the specified skin area.
    • Automatic reminders: The app may suggest that you schedule your next check, especially if one of your results requires observation over time. For example, if SkinAI recommended rechecking a lesion in 3 months, then upon saving that result to history an option will appear to automatically add a reminder for the appropriate date. You can accept, and the event will be added to the calendar.
    • Viewing scheduled checks: Below the calendar, a list of upcoming scheduled checks is usually displayed (for example, “In 5 days – examine mole on back”). This helps you keep track of upcoming tasks. Completed checks (when the date arrives and you perform the scan) may automatically be removed from the upcoming list.
    • History by date: In addition to future reminders, the calendar allows you to quickly find past checks by date. Switch to previous months — dates on which you performed scans will be highlighted. By tapping such a date, you will see all checks done on that day listed, and you can open any result. This is an alternative way to navigate your history, which is convenient if you have a large number of entries.

This calendar and scheduling feature is especially useful for long-term monitoring. It helps you build a habit of examining your skin regularly. We recommend setting reminders according to the app’s suggestions or your doctor’s advice — for example, check certain moles once a month, or more frequently if you have many lesions. SkinAI will remind you when it’s time to take a new photo, which increases the chance of noticing any concerning changes early.

    4.7 AI Assistant and Consultations

The bottom navigation bar of the app includes a section for consultations, where you can get additional help with your results:

    • AI chat assistant: SkinAI offers an integrated AI chat feature that can answer general questions about skin health and guide you in using the app. This “AI-chat” allows you to have a conversational Q&A within the app to get quick information or advice based on SkinAI’s knowledge base. (This feature provides informational support and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.)
    • Online dermatologist consultation: SkinAI also provides an option for remote consultation with a dermatologist. With your permission, a dermatologist can access your saved results and provide professional advice through the app. From a result card, you can initiate a consultation request (as noted in section 4.3). A dermatologist will then review your images and results and communicate with you via the app’s chat. This service may require a PRO subscription or an additional fee, and availability can vary. Use this feature to obtain a qualified medical opinion on any results that concern you.

These consultation features are designed to complement SkinAI’s analysis by providing additional guidance from AI or human experts. Always use the information responsibly and follow up with a healthcare professional for any serious concerns.

    4.8 Long-Term Skin Monitoring

An important function of SkinAI is to assist in long-term monitoring of skin lesions. It’s good to check a mole once, but it is far more valuable to observe how it changes over time. The app provides tools for tracking changes in your skin’s condition over the long term:

    • Trend graphs: SkinAI can display graphical representations of changes to help you identify trends. For example, the app might calculate a relative “risk score” for a lesion over time. In one example, a graph could show this risk indicator gradually increasing each month over six months — a clear upward trend. Such a graph signals that the lesion is changing over time and warrants increased attention from a specialist.
    • Side-by-side comparisons: The app allows you to compare images of the same skin area taken at different times. In the history section, select the lesion of interest, then use the “Compare” function. A comparison view will open, showing two photos either side by side or toggling between “before” and “after.” This allows you to notice changes with your own eyes: the appearance of new spots on a mole, an increase in diameter, a change in color or the shape of the borders, etc. Such visual assessment, combined with SkinAI’s analysis data, is very useful for early detection of concerning transformations.
    • Follow-up reminders: As mentioned in section 4.6, the app can recommend when to perform the next scan of a specific lesion. For example, if a result does not appear worrisome, SkinAI might suggest re-scanning in 6 months; if there is some risk, it might suggest in 1–3 months. These recommendations are based on standard dermatological monitoring protocols. Follow them by setting a reminder in the calendar, and the app will alert you on the appropriate day.

    4.9 Points System (Gamification)

SkinAI may include a “points” or gamification system to encourage regular use. This system is a game-like, auxiliary feature. It does not affect the medical accuracy of your skin analysis. You will not get a “better diagnosis” by earning more points. The point system is only for user engagement and does not replace any core functionality. Therefore, treat it simply as a bonus. Your skin health is evaluated by the neural network objectively, regardless of the number of checks you perform.

    5. Warranty and Legal Provisions

Before you start using SkinAI, we strongly recommend that you read the warranty and legal information related to the application. This information, including the disclaimer (waiver of liability), warranty terms, and intellectual property rights, is published on the official SkinAI website or in the “About” section of the app.
